When is Mothering Sunday in 2025?

This year Mother’s Day is on Sunday, the 30th of March.

Origin of Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday was originally celebrated as religious event in the 16th Century. It had no connection to mothers at all as the word “mothering” referred to the “mother church” (i.e. the main church or cathedral of the region). On the fourth Sunday of Lent, people would return to their mother church for a special service.

By the beginning of the 20th Century, the tradition of Mothering Sunday had almost died out. Constance Penswick-Smith worked hard to revive interest. She wrote a book and founded the Society for the Observance of Mothering Sunday. Thanks to her efforts and the popularity of Mother’s Day in the USA, the tradition was restored with a focus on celebrating motherhood.
